The Importance of Tank Cleaning
Rain water tanks, while providing a fantastic source of water for drinking, domestic and agricultural use, can also become a health hazard. Poorly maintained tanks can provide a breeding ground for pathogenic micro-organisms such as bacteria and parasites from bird and animal droppings. Rainwater can also be contaminated from roof or plumbing materials. Rodents and other animals can also get into the tanks and dead carcases can be a hub for microorganisms (and smell!).
Unfortunately, the microbiological quality of rainwater collected in domestic tanks is generally poorer than many public water supplies, often because tank maintenance is overlooked. The positive news is that regular cleaning and maintenance of the water tank and harvesting area (eg roof/gutters), as well as tank water treatment (such as with filtration) can mitigate any of this risk.
During a TANK CLEAN Sam will inspect, de-sludge (including removing all foreign objects such as leaf litter, dirt, animal caucuses, rocks and faeces)and treat the existing tank water. He uses a method that avoids draining and wasting water. The water is able to be safely used immediately after treatment.
Sam recommends that tank cleaning be carried out BEFORE you have low tank levels (over 25% full, ideally over 25%) and every 1-2 years depending on the location, size, debris fall and components of your tank. Sam can let you know how often this needs to be done based on your particular set up as there isnt a "one size fits all" answer
